First “Godzilla” trailer released: The brilliance in marketing

Yesterday, February 25th, the first official full-length trailer for the movie “Godzilla” was released, and the reaction to it has been nothing short of monstrous. People everywhere, including myself, are freaking out in excitement over the latest glimpse of the great tyrant, but why is the reaction to this latest trailer, and really the entire movie been so unusually large? The reason is simple. The people of the “Godzilla” movie are doing marketing right.

It’s become a sad and annoying trend lately for movies to explain, giveaway and release every single detail about a film before its release. The reason I suppose is to create hype, but the “Godzilla” movie has taken a different approach, and it is more than working for them. Instead of giving everything away right from the start, Godzilla is giving absolutely nothing way. Look through the Internet all you want, scour the trailer, you absolutely will not find a complete image of the movies main character, Godzilla (excluding tons and tons of fan art, which of course is all unofficial). What has this fact done? Created incredible hype for the new movie.

As far as the trailer goes, we get a lot of Bryan Cranston, a very, very minuscule amount of Godzilla, and maybe even a look at . . . another monster? Maybe. That possibility is the only thing that could be more exciting than Godzilla himself. As you can see for a few brief seconds in the trailer, something that does not exactly resemble a plane is flying around and a monstrous arm that can’t possibly belong to Godzilla is seen. I’ve added pictures below in case you miss their split-second appearance on-screen.

To find out exactly what this creature is, we may have to wait until another trailer is released, or maybe, if the marketing team continues on the path it has, we may have to wait until the movie is released all together (I personally hope it’s the second option.)

Godzilla hits theaters everywhere May 16th.
