Life after Littlefield: Pirates 6, Astros 3
Another game against a sub-.500 team, another Pirates’ victory as the Pirates knocked around the Astros’ pitchers in a 6-3 win as they try to close in on a Wild Card spot.
Behind the quality start of Kevin Correia, who went six innings and gave up only one earned run, and another solid game by the rookie Brock Holt and outfielder Alex Presley, the Pirates achieved their 72nd win of the season. That is the same amount of wins from all of last season and there are still 26 games left.
Once again, young second baseman Brock Holt had a major contribution in tonight’s win, as he drove in two runs to give him a total of three RBI in five games. Along with Holt, Presley also played a big role in the victory tonight as he scored three times while collecting two hits. With outfielder Travis Snider most likely going to miss at least a couple games, it is in Presley’s best interest to make the most of his opportunity as his window to be an everyday player in Pittsburgh is closing.
While a sweep of the Astros really needed to happen, winning the series was an absolute must for a team like the Pirates that are fighting for their playoff lives. With an off-day tomorrow, the team looks to try and get their injured regulars such as Snider, Neil Walker and Jeff Karstens rested and back in the lineup as the team prepares to take on another sub-.500 team in the Chicago Cubs for a weekend series that, based on the pitching matchups at least, could be a very timely three-game sweep.
