MOON TOWNSHIP- On October 13th, the Society of Women Engineers held its first event of the 2025-2026 school year.
Located in The Basement, students were welcomed by group leaders, and guests planted their own succulents. Attendees selected their own succulent plant from a variety of options, got a mini pot and filled it with soil, and decorated their pot with some fun acrylic markers.
Kamille Horton, a sophomore student and Mechanical Engineering major at RMU, wanted to host a new event that she hadn’t experienced on campus.
“I wanted to put an event on at campus that I hadn’t seen before. As a sophomore, I’ve never seen it as an event.”
Adding to her statement, “I wanted to choose something that was friendly for all majors and something I had never seen before…”
When asked what she hoped to gain with this event, she stated, “I hope to gain more publicity for the Society of Women Engineers at RMU… It’s not a very engineering-heavy school, and especially for women engineers, we don’t have a lot of publicity in that facet.”
“I hope more people are willing to come to these events and understand who we are as a society.”
Her goal is to inform RMU students of the group’s welcoming and inclusive environment.
Later, she was asked what she wants people to know about SWE. She stated, “The Society of Women Engineers isn’t only made up of engineers… You can be any major, you don’t have to be a woman, you know? It’s just run by women engineers…”
“We choose to do two per month, so we do one social event, and then do major-based events, something that’s going to build the qualities that you have as an engineer or just an individual in general.”
The group’s next event, “LED Sign Making,” will be on October 27th.
