Australia Zoo has a new member joining them.

On September 10th, Robert Irwin announced on TikTok that the zoo had just added Quokkas to the Australia Zoo animal family. Though Quokkas are native to Australia, the zoo has never had them before.

“We have been dreaming of Quokkas for the longest time,” Irwin says in a TikTok post. “And now we can say we finally got ’em.”

While this news is exciting, some are still left wondering what the Quokka is.

According to the San Diego Zoo, a Quokka is the “smallest type of wallaby in Australia. About the size of a house cat, this fuzzy, pouch-packing, nocturnal herbivore is terrestrial, but can climb about 5 feet up a tree for a tasty snack.”

They are known as “the happiest animals in the world.” This is due to their happy nature and when they are smiling! Sadly, even with their happy disposition, they don’t make good house pets.

However, you can take part in Australia Zoo’s “Quite Cute Quokka Encounter.” You can feed them their favorite leafy treat, and if they are feeling social, they will sniff your nose. You will also learn about their lives and the ways they are trying to conserve them from wildlife experts. Tickets to spend time with these happy little creatures cost $124 per person at Australia Zoo.
