On October 3, at 4:45 P.M., Kevin McCarthy was ousted as Speaker of the House after lawmakers voted to remove him from the position. This is the first time in United States history that a U.S. speaker of the house has been removed from the job via a motion to vacate.

Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California had already faced challenges when entering office. To begin, he was voted into office after going through 15 rounds of voting and making several promises and deals to secure his seat.

As of Monday, Matt Gaetz, the Republican from Florida, introduced a motion to remove McCarthy as speaker of the house. Gaetz expressed his outrage following his successful cooperation with Democrats over the new spending bill and several broken promises he made back in January when voted in as speaker.

There was blame from Gaetz and his allies for McCarthy using the Democratic votes to pass funding so they could temporarily avoid a government shutdown. Bob Good, was one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy, and vocally stated that he would not vote for McCarthy.

McCarthy’s allies, some of the most conservative in Congress, said he reduced spending and successfully advanced more conservative policies despite not having control of the Senate and White House.

The House plunged into chaos as nobody knew the next move because there was no alternative option for a speaker lined up. The vote was nothing short of turmoil and chaos.

For an hour, Gaetz and his followers went on and stated why McCarthy should be removed from his post. McCarthy’s allies argued on grounds of why he should stay.

There was bickering back and forth in the House of Representatives from the Republican Party that criticized each other. There were also many efforts made by Republicans who backed McCarthy to block the ousting but failed.

The House of Representatives is now in recess as they need another vote to appoint a new Speaker of the House. Currently, a McCarthy ally, Patrick Mchenry, has been appointed interim speaker. His only responsibilities are to call for a recess, adjourn the chamber, and recognize whoever is nominated to run for speaker.
