Police are investigating the scene after multiple gunshots were fired outside of Ross Park Mall in Allegheny County on Tuesday night.
Deputy Police Chief of Ross Township Brian Kohlhepp, spoke to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 and said officials were called to the mall at 7:55 p.m. following reports of gunshots being fired.
Gunfire was exchanged between multiple people in the parking lot between the Dick’s Sporting Goods and Nordstrom store. An official number of people involved was not immediately clear.
One person was injured, and multiple people were involved, but no arrests have been made.
According to Kohlhepp, one person is believed to have been injured in the shooting. They were later taken to a local hospital. A vehicle on the scene also appeared to have sustained damage.
Sources spoke to Action News 4 and said a male victim injured in the incident was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment. He is being questioned by police. The victim’s condition has not been released.
Each store was notified once the shooting occurred, and each store has its own protocol for sheltering in place.
“I know that the mall followed their normal protocol and they made notification to the stores, and to shoppers inside, which worked well and kept the mall safe,” Kohlhepp said. “And then when we came and determined the scene that was safe, then we evacuated the rest of those stores.”
According to officials, it is still unclear as to exactly where the shooting took place and said that surveillance video in the area is being utilized in the investigation.
“What we’re doing now is pouring through surveillance video to see if we can determine who it is that was involved,” Kohlhepp said.
Officials are also utilizing license plate readers to track down the individuals involved in the incident.
Sources told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that police are searching for a silver Kia Sedona that was thought to be involved in the incident.
Kohlhepp mentioned the vehicle was recovered in Wilkinsburg outside of a home overnight.
“That is in our custody right now, at our evidence processing bay,” said Kohlhepp.
He then added, “We’re going to be conducting a search on that hopefully later today to look for further evidence. We have been able to identify and actually interview a couple of people, a few of the people that were involved with this as well…from that scene overnight.”
This is not the first incident at Ross Park Mall. In 2021, shots were fired after a fight amongst people broke out inside.
Officials were asked about additional safety measures. Officials mentioned since the installation of a better surveillance system after the 2021 incident, there has not been any issues until Tuesday.
Kohlhepp could not mention how many people were questioned overnight or the ages of those involved in the incident. He said some were juveniles, but he could not elaborate further.
No arrests have been made as of noon on Tuesday.
