An update was provided by a Fayette County School warning parents that the shaved ice at a Trunk-or-Treat event was possibly contaminated with insulin and broken glass.
At the event, grade schoolers were served shaved ice from the company “Have An Ice Day.” An email and social media post was sent out letting parents and families know if their child had consumed the shaved ice, they should reach out and receive medical attention immediately.
According to Robert Leighty, who is a parent said, “We were surprised, but I think the school district did everything they should. They sent out information as soon as possible. I have no issues with how the school district is handling everything.”
Many parents had their children taken to doctors, and so far, there have been zero reports of any harmful effects.
Later, the owner of the ice-truck, Mark Howard, claimed that it was a complete accident and as soon as he realized there may have been an issue they stopped serving the shaved ice. Sources claim his dog’s insulin may have gotten into the machine and is currently working with his attorney to face potential charges from the Pennsylvania state police. It is being determined if Howard will face charges.
Multiple caregivers and parents had no negative things to say about Howard or the company, stating it was a simple human accident, just “unfortunate that it happened to grade school kids”.
Additionally, according to the ADA (American Diabetes Association) insulin must be injected into the bloodstream for any sort of affect to occur.
