MOON TOWNSHIP- The RMU Colonials (1-4) could not complete the late-game comeback, as Central Connecticut (3-3) spoiled homecoming weekend as well as what could’ve been an RMU Football after-party, sealing the game in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils dominated the first half of the game. After both teams exchanged three-and-outs, CCSU’s defense would light the game’s first flame with an interception by Jahvante Royal at the Devils’ 30.
Central Connecticut’s quarterback Brady Olson would lead the Devils down the field and cap off the drive with a deep pass to wide receiver Donovan Wadley for a 34-yard touchdown.
CCSU would not let its foot off the pedal for the entire half. RMU would stall out the next drive, and the Devil offense would capitalize. The Devils drove down the field and completed the drive with a 29-yard carry down the middle by running back Elijah Howard for the touchdown to make it 14-0 Blue Devils to close quarter one.
After a scoreless second quarter, an undisciplined and agitated Robert Morris let their mistakes cost them multiple opportunities, and CCSU took advantage.
RMU quarterback Cooper Panteck would throw an interception to CCSU linebacker Devon Anderson, which was returned for a 55-yard pick-six: 21-0 Blue Devils.
The Colonials could not get the gears turning, and as the third quarter was ending, a missed field goal attempt from 33 yards by kicker Jayson Jenkins would leave the Colonials scoreless heading into the fourth.
As the possible shutout loomed over the Colonials’ heads, the mighty march continued, and the white flag would not be waved. Even with an injury to Panteck, who would leave the game after a three-yard rush, sophomore quarterback Jake Wolfe would enter the game to finish the drive for the Colonials.
Wolfes’ cannon blasted a 34-yard bomb to wide receiver Chaz Middleton to put the Colonials in the red zone.
Middleton would finish the drive successfully, as a six-yard toe-tap touchdown would put the Colonials on the board for the first time today. The PAT attempt would be blocked by the Devils, and the Colonials entered desperation mode, as the score was now 21-6.
Jason Jenkins’ on-side kick attempt succeeded, and the offense entered the battlefield once more.
On 2nd and 2, a roughing the passer call on Central Connecticut’s Gavin Taylor would give RMU a little boost on their 28-yard reception by Chaz Middleton, which moved the Colonials back into the red zone, 7 yards away from the end zone.
No huddle and in shotgun formation, Donta Wack rammed his way into the end zone for the Colonial touchdown. A two-point attempt would end up in an overthrown pass, and the score reads 21-12.
Both sides are feeling pressure, and Robert Morris needs a stop to keep the comeback alive.
The Blue Devil drive started with a 17-yard, first-down run by Elijah Howard, moving them to the RMU 42. A quarterback keeper Brady Olsen would add 12 yards to the drive and pick up another first down.
The Blue Devils could not convert a touchdown but capped off the drive with a 35-yard field goal from Jack Hennessey, setting the score to 24-12 for CCSU.
With 4:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, Robert Morris would not be able to capitalize on what would be their last drive of the contest. The Blue Devil offense would trot back onto the field to kill time off the clock, and with 11 seconds remaining in the game, the battered RMU offense could only do so much to try and tally some more points.
The final score would end at 24-12, as this would be the third loss in a row for the Robert Morris Colonials, putting them at a 1-5 record.
The Colonials’ next stretch of 3 games will all be away from Moon Township, not returning to Joe Walton Stadium until Nov 8, when they host the Wagner Seahawks.
Until then, the Colonials will travel to Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, New York. They will face the LIU Sharks (2-4) on Saturday, Oct 18. Kickoff time set for 12:00 p.m. EST.
