Sixth flu death reported in Allegheny County

MOON TOWNSHIP — Officials report that a sixth person has died from the flu this year.
According to a statement from the Allegheny County Health Department officials, another Allegheny County resident has died from the flu. Officials say a woman in her mid-80s died due to flu complications.
Flu deaths during the 2018-19 flu season have been significantly less, according to the health department’s website.
During the 2017-18 flu season, more than 10,500 cases of the flu were confirmed in Allegheny County, resulting in 664 hospitalizations and 25 deaths.
As of March 12, only 4,651 cases of the flu have been reported in Allegheny County, resulting in six deaths.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that more than 32,501 cases of the flu have been reported across the state, a steep decrease from the 122,030 cases reported during the 2017-18 season.
Officials encourage residents that did not already get a flu shot to do so.
“Residents are also encouraged to practice proper hygiene tactics like washing hands frequently and coughing or sneezing into an elbow,” said health officials in a statement.
