The brand new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport is finally here, the culmination of an almost decade-long journey to transform the passenger traveling experience.
On October 11th 2025, the terminal completion was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by an open house for the public. During the ceremony, several elected officials gave remarks, including Senator Dave McCormick and Governor Josh Shapiro. Congressmen, council members, house representatives, senators, and executives all gathered to commemorate the gorgeous new airport terminal.
Vince Gastgeb, ACAA Chief Government & Corporate Affairs Officer, stated in his opening remarks that this new terminal is made ‘for Pittsburghers by Pittsburghers.’ This sentiment was repeated by many during the ceremony to highlight the importance of partnership and community when it comes to new projects like this. In fact, over 90 percent of the labor and supplies are locally sourced, according to the CEO of Alleghany County Airport Authority (ACAA), Christina Cassotis.
News writer Amere Keasley visited PIT in March earlier this year when the new terminal was still an active construction zone. In his article, he mentions how the architecture is going to be inspired by the natural environment in Pittsburgh.
Now, months later, that vision is an awe-inspiring reality. The ceiling and tree-like columns are supposed to represent the rolling hills and beautiful night sky that Pittsburghers see every day.
There are small lights representing stars twinkling overhead, then below your feet are inlaid, metallic leaves to mimic the forest floor. The beautiful architecture is only some of what this new terminal has to offer.
With over 6,000 new parking spots, 12 security lanes, 15 new retail and dining options, a shorter baggage claim conveyor belt, and much more, the new terminal is set to transform the passenger experience.
Another tribute to the people of Pittsburgh comes in the form of the new welcome Point for friends and family. With more space pre-security, saying goodbye just got a little easier. Not to mention the large outdoor patios that will provide travelers with even more comfort and flexibility. For autistic travelers or even those who just want a little peace and quiet, Presley’s Place is a sensory-friendly suite; just one of many accommodations in the new terminal. It is clear that accessibility, comfort, and community are all priorities for this new era of travel at Pittsburgh International Airport.
An exact opening day has not been set yet, but the terminal is still slated to open sometime this fall. The people of Pittsburgh are certainly eager to welcome this large new addition to the community. Keep your eyes peeled on the airport website for any updates regarding opening day, and remember to check out Amere’s article to see even more of the journey!
