In their final regular season matchup of the season, the Robert Morris Colonials defeated the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 66-54 to earn at least a share of the regular season NEC title.

Why it happened:

The motto “Defense wins championships” reigns true for this Robert Morris team that really struggled offensively at the beginning of the game. RMU shot just 3-for-14 from the field in the first quarter while trailing 14-8. But it was players like Jocelynne Jones, whose aptitude for strong defensive play helped create turnovers that resulted in easy baskets for a Colonials team struggling to get anything to fall. The Colonials would score __ points off of the __ turnovers they forced to help take control of the game.

Who was there:

Mikalah Mulrain and Nadege Pluviose were by far the most all-around players for the Colonials in this game. Mulrain posting a stat line of 8 points, eight rebounds and an assist while Pluviose earned herself 9 points, four rebounds and a steal. These players are never anything flashy, but they are just as important as any other member of this team when it comes down to their success this season.

Who starred:

Megan Callahan is making her case for NEC Rookie of the year with another stellar performance from the freshman guard. Callahan shot 6-for-12 from the field for 15 points which included going 3-for-5 from long range. Callahan making the most of every opportunity to help RMU get the win.

Who stumbled:

Coming off missing last game due to an upper-body injury. Honoka Ikematsu struggled to find her footing in this one, shooting just 2-for-9 on the day. It was an uncharacteristically bad day for one of the best shooting guards in the entire nation which included five turnovers to go with her sluggish performance.

Who is next:

Much is this comes down to the results of other NEC matchups as RMU is still in contention for the first seed in the NEC. But for that to happen, they need Bryant to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn and Sacred Heart to get the win over Fairleigh Dickinson. With these games still in action, RMU is forced to sit and wait to see if they can once again call themselves NEC Champions.
