On Friday, November 7th, the PRSSA of Robert Morris University hosted an event called “Serve Up a Cure.”
The event would be a recreational pickleball tournament, held at the RMU Rec Center starting at 6 PM.
All proceeds from the tournament and the raffle would go towards Breakthrough T1D and their life-changing research, which focuses on the prevention, treatment, and potential cure to Type 1 Diabetes.
The pickleball tournament was held in a March Madness-style format.
Twelve Teams, consisting of two Robert Morris students, would compete in a premier pickleball clash for a chance at the gold medals.
Tournament rules were as follows:
-The game starts with a serve from the right-hand side.
-Only one serve attempt, with only the serving team being able to capture points.
-Each team must let the ball bounce once after the serve and the return.
-Games will go to 15 points; however, you must win by two. If you do not win by two, you keep playing until you score 21 points with a two-point difference or until the end of the 10-minute match.
After many close and competitive matches, it would come down to the final two teams.
In the end, the winning team would be “Big Dink Energy,” captained by Logan Wienand and Owen Beck.
When asked about their victory, Owen Beck replied, “It feels wonderful…” Logan Wienand followed up with “Feels great. Another hard-fought win. Really worked hard for this one…”.
“I mean, it just makes it feel a little better… knowing we were playing for something good.” “It’s nice to win for a good cause.”
Student participation highlights the significance of these student-run events, especially when they are supporting a good cause.
