From Nov. 18 to Nov. 20, some RMU students will be giving up several days of their Thanksgiving break to help those less fortunate.

“We will be taking twelve students to stay overnight in Pittsburgh,” said Jessica Mann, volunteer service coordinator in the office of student engagement. “While there, they will be focusing on issues of hunger and homelessness in the community.”

During the excursion, this group of a dozen students will be working with nonprofit organizations, including Community Human Services, Women’s Center and Shelter of Pittsburgh, Shepherd’s Heart and the Homeless Children’s Education Fund.

Upon application, students were asked to describe any activities or organizations they were currently involved in.

Also, they were requested to share any skills, hobbies or training they had that would benefit the community they would be serving. This would include, for example, first aid certification, construction experience and various other abilities.

“A majority of the students have never gone before,” Mann said. “So, we didn’t know what to expect.”

The Office of Student Engagement believes that this is great opportunity for students to make a difference in the community, just in time for the holidays.

Derek Fisk, junior, is an active individual in community service opportunities. He believes this is a unique way to give back to the community.

“It’s nice to see people reaching out to others in need during this time of year,” Fisk said. “Everyone could use a hand now and then, especially in these hard economic times.”

The volunteers from RMU were reminded that the Alternative Fall Break program takes time, effort and commitment. Those who did not agree could not be eligible for consideration.
