I live in Yorktown Hall, and for those who do not know, Yorktown Hall is a resident hall about five minutes from the Robert Morris main campus. It is a renovated hotel and comes with all the amenities you would expect from a hotel. It is a great place to live, and I have not had any problems living there, until this year.
Since my freshman year, the parking at Yorktown has always been a little tight with spaces, but there always was an open space. This year, however, if you get to Yorktown past 8 p.m. all the spots are filled. It is so bad to the point that people have to park wherever they possibly can.
This year, many people have parked in spaces you are not supposed to park in. People park in no-parking zones, diesel-only vehicle zones, and even parking on the hill down to the actual lot. This is only a problem because Yorktown now only has one lot. It has become overbooked for lack of a better term. Again, this was not a problem my last two years at Robert Morris, but this year something changed, and there are simply too many parking passes and not enough parking space.
The problem arises because of the construction project that began last year. The project was supposed to fix the two upper lots at Yorktown. Whether the lots even needed repair is up for debate, but I digress.
We, the students, were told that the project would be done by last spring semester. Then, we were told by the end of the year, and finally, it turned out the school had no idea when the project was going to finish. Luckily within the last few days, we have begun to see some preparation being done. Construction vehicles have been moved in, and there have been safety markers put up.
We students at Yorktown can only hope that with the beginning of the project, that soon, all of us will have a nice space to park at any time of the day.
