The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is full of many throwbacks to the franchise’s many games such as Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, and Super Mario Odyssey.
However, even with all of the throwbacks, there are some problems with the movie itself.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially released on Apr. 1 and is considered a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie made by Nintendo and Illumination. Mario and crew including Luigi, Peach, and Toad travel the galaxy to unfamiliar worlds to stop Bowser Jr. There are many new characters that star in this film including the addition of Rosalina, Bowser Jr, and Yoshi. With these new characters however comes some plot holes.
With these new characters come less time for prominent characters in the first film such as Toad and Bowser. However, even the new characters are shortened in the screentime and after watching the film it will soon be realized that main characters shown in the trailers should have been prioritized over others.
Compared to the first movie, which had an easier plot to follow, this movie had a lot of plot points that could lead people to be confused. It was also much more fast paced compared to the original; the movie could’ve been extended by 5 to 10 minutes to better bring these plots together.
With all of these issues however, there are a lot of fun parts. Yoshi really stars in the movie and brings the comedic relief to this relatively darker movie compared to the first. The throwbacks are very nice and even some other characters that play small roles such as Wart, Honey Queen, and R.O.B. are very nice additions that fans of the games would not expect in this movie.
The voice acting is also exceptional especially with the new characters such as Rosalina, Wart, and Honey Queen. The post credit scenes also bring a nice sense of what possibly could come next in the franchise.
My overall rating is a 7 out of 10. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has many throwbacks and humor which makes it a great movie to watch with family and friends. However, some of the throwbacks, especially big ones involving major characters, don’t quite work with the plot and lead to a plot that can be seen as complicated and hard to process at some points. The movie shoots for the stars and comes up short in multiple ways but it can still be seen as a great movie to watch.
