Mackenzie Amalia is Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference bound as she announced her commitment to the Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday.

Amalia was an integral part of the Robert Morris women’s basketball team over the past three years.

The local product from Beaver Falls, Pa. finally stepped into a starting role this season at the point guard position, starting in all 30 games. She averaged 6.1 points per game and averaged 28 percent shooting from the field. She also added a team-high 83 assists.

This past season, Amalia stepped into a leadership role as she was the most experienced player on the Colonials’ roster. The junior was propelled into the role with Robert Morris not having a single senior on the team along with her fellow junior teammate, Sol Castro, who missed the entirety of the 2022-23 campaign.

“She is always someone that will be remembered as committed to the program at a very young age,” head coach Charlie Buscaglia said after Amalia’s senior day against Milwaukee. “She really felt connected to everything that we’re doing, and she’s grown up a lot here. She’s really taking on a leadership role, and it’s not easy. We need that leadership, and all the way up until this game, I can remember moment after moment of her taking that next step as a leader. I’m very proud of her.”

During her sophomore season, Amalia started to form into a key three-point shooter for the Colonials as she knocked down 35.2 percent of her shots from beyond the arc. She also averaged 5.2 points per game and 19.7 minutes per contest coming off the bench.

In her freshman campaign, Amalia appeared in 15 of the Colonials’ 17 games. The 5-foot-5 guard posted a career-high 22 points against Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 19, 2021.

Amalia joins a Canisius team that is coming off the heels of a 9-21 season, going 6-14 in MAAC play.

With two years of eligibility remaining, Amalia will look to provide some production from the point guard position with the three ball for the Golden Griffins.
