Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney

Every February 2nd in Punxsutawney, PA, Phil the groundhog will say if there are 6 more weeks of winter, or if an early spring will come. If he sees his shadow it’s six more weeks of winter and if Phil doesn’t, there will be an early spring. This year RMU Sentry media made the trip to Punxsutawney to see Punxy Phil.

The atmosphere at Gobblers Knob is quite surprising. In fact, there are beverages, corn hole, singing, and dancing all in the hope that Phil will not see his shadow. I would best compare the atmosphere to one of a concert.

People from all over came to Punxsutawney, like Scott and his daughter from Wisconsin, and they have their different reasons for coming. “Well we came here last year, it was nice and cold, it’s just nice. The experience of seeing something that we didn’t really believe was real.”

You also have people like Joe from Cleveland who simply just likes free stuff.“I love going to free things. Closest thing I can compare this to is Nathan’s hot dogs,” said Joe.

This year was the largest attended Groundhogs Day according to the Inter Circle. The Inter Circle is the group that puts on Groundhog Day.

As everyone hoped, Phil did not see his shadow meaning early spring! The crowd went absolutely nuts with kids running everywhere and people cheering like their team just won the Super Bowl.

February 2nd at Gobblers Knob is one of the best events you can attend in person. It has something for everyone and I highly suggest taking the trip up to Punxsutawney.
