A Pennsylvanian man who set fire to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home during Passover, has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in state prison.
Cody Balmer, 38, pleaded guilty on October 14, 2025 to charges including terrorism, multiple counts of arson and reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, burglary, and loitering, WBAL-TV reported.
Prosecutors said Balmer climbed a security fence at Shapiro’s house late Sunday night, April 13, 2025, and he threw Molotov cocktails at the residence.
Surveillance footage showed him breaking into the residence with a sledgehammer. He was seen on surveillance video throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window, and was also seen banging on two doors within the residence.
When asked about his motives for the attack, Balmer could not confirm what they were. It is believed to be that he was upset about the Governor’s stance on the issues happening in Gaza.
No injuries were reported. Balmer told investigators he couldn’t explain his motive, but officials believe the attack may have been related to Shapiro’s stance on the conflict in Gaza.
Balmer will be eligible for parole in 2050 and will remain under supervision until 2075, prosecutors said.
