Robert Morris University announced the new Campus Chief of Police to students via email on Wednesday, December 17. Delbert (D.J.) DeWitt will fill the position, effective January 5, 2026. Chief Broderick will serve as RMU Police Chief in the interim.
Chief DeWitt is described as, ‘a dedicated law enforcement professional and public servant,’ by Renée T. Cavalovitch, General Counsel and Vice President for Legal Affairs & Risk Management at RMU. Cavalovitch also shares that DeWitt holds skills in physical safety, event logistics and security, emergency management, and risk threat assessment and mitigation.
DeWitt holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Waynesburg University, and previously served at the Uniontown Police Department, where he has been an officer since 2011, and Chief since 2021. Chief Dewitt’s wife, Katie, is originally from the Moon Township area, with herself and their two sons relocating to the area to be closer to family.
Chief DeWitt’s resignation from the Uniontown Police Department was one of many in recent years, shrinking the department to 12 permanent members, according to an article from the Observer-Reporter. Such losses have caused the department to begin partnering with the Pennsylvania State Police, sharing shifts to maintain consistent coverage of the area. It is unclear if the Uniontown Police Department will increase benefits or salaries to attract or retain officers.
Chief DeWitt is passionate about RMU’s missions, community policing, and is committed to helping students stay safe and become Unstoppable.
