After a successful weekend across RMU Sports, one which saw series sweeps from both hockey programs, wins from men’s and women’s basketball, and great performances from track and field, the Colonials have nabbed three individual awards for their efforts.
Dom Elliott joined Darius Livingston and Desean Goode, the basketball duo who swept Horizon League freshman and player of the week, as a third Men’s player to pick up an award.
Elliott, who was named AHA defenseman of the week on Tuesday, scored the lone goal in men’s hockey’s 1-0 win over Canisius last weekend.
The sophomore also blocked 11 shots and was a pivotal part of killing off all four of Canisius’ power plays.
A native of Michigan, Elliott has been a key part of this late Colonial resurgence. During the team’s run of winning six of the last ten, Elliott has scored three times and tallied seven assists. Elliott has five goals and nine assists this season.
Jessica MacKinnon joins Elliott as the second hockey player to pick up AHA honors this week, but extends her total awards to four this season. The Clarks Harbour native previously collected two other forward of the week awards prior to this one, as well as a forward of the month award to add to the mantle.
MacKinnon has been outstanding for the Colonials this season. Heading into a pivotal, final regular-season series against Lindenwood, Mackinnon has tallied 14 goals and 22 assists. But the real impact has been found at the dots, where the sophomore has dominated, leading the NCAA in faceoff wins with 466.
Between Mackinnon and second place is a whopping 39-win gap, almost surely wrapping up that category in favor of the Colonial.
And last but most certainly not least is Mariya Chamberlin of women’s track and field. The senior from South Carolina picked up track and field’s third award of the season, this time earning Female Field Athlete of the Week.
Chamberlin’s performance at the Doug Raymond invitational was impressive, placing seventh in triple jump and 13th in long jump. Chamberlin’s 11.94-meter jump, which placed seventh, was the third longest in school history and the best in the Horizon League this season.
Chamberlin and the team will travel to Youngstown on Friday for the YSU Last Chance Meet, the final meet before the Horizon League Championship, which RMU won last season.
