It was a dismal weekend at Clearview Arena as both Robert Morris hockey programs were swept. The men’s team (2-5-1) took on the Long Island Sharks in a home and home series, as the women’s team (5-9-0) welcomed northern rivals Mercyhurst.
The women’s team played the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday and Saturday. They fell short in both games losing 5-1 on Friday and 7-2 on Saturday. The only goal scorers for Robert Morris were Jessica Mackinnon, Taylor Storey, and Emma Goding.
Mercyhurst dominated the first game, outshooting Robert Morris 36-24, while the Laker’s strong defense prevented the Colonials from getting the puck on net. Robert Morris played stronger in the second game, but penalties killed them. Mercyhurst would score three of their seven goals on the power play.
Freshman Yiyi Peng made her first collegiate start in goal for the Colonials, recording nineteen saves and a .947 sv%. Taylor Storey scored a goal and added an assist, recording her second ever multi-point game, but it was not enough to overcome the Lakers.
The men’s team faced Long Island University this weekend, but went 0-2 against the Sharks. Despite outshooting Long Island on Friday 30-27, the Colonials lost 6-3.
Robert Morris struck first as Patrick Johnson scored his second goal of the season, but Long Island would respond with 5 unanswered. The Colonials would score two in the latter stages, but it was too little too late.
The Colonials came back stronger on Saturday and outshot Long Island 31-30. Freshman goalie Charlie Schenkel played a strong game in net, recording a .933 sv%. Robert Morris allowed one power play goal, as they had a total of nineteen penalty minutes in the game.
Saturday’s game was Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley’s 700th game coaching for the team. Despite the Colonial’s strong effort, it was not enough to beat the independently scheduled team.
Both teams will have the chance to repay the Colonials faithful at home this week, as both host series at Clearview Arena again. The women’s team will be welcoming RPI on Friday and Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. on both days. The men will play right after at 7 when they face RIT.
