MOON TOWNSHIP– This weekend in Colonials’ sports features action from the men’s and women’s basketball and hockey teams as we get closer to the heart of their seasons.
Men’s hockey takes on Mercyhurst
The Colonials (7-5-1, 7-2-1 AHA) will take on their in-state rivals Mercyhurst (4-8, 2-4 AHA) for the first time this season in a home and home series on Friday and Saturday. They will look to rebound after going 0-1-1 in their last two games.
One bright spot over the last two games was goaltender Justin Kapelmaster, whose solid numbers kept the Colonials in both games. Saving 34 and 40 shots respectively over the weekend, the senior now has an impressive .950 save% and a 1.82 GAA so far this season.
Women’s hockey aims to sweep road trip
The women’s hockey team (8-5-1, 4-0-0 CHA) will face the St. Lawrence Saints (5-6-3, 1-3-1 ECAC) as they try and turn their current six-game win streak into eight games on Friday and Saturday, as they aim to sweep all six games of their road trip.
It was a big game last Sunday for Michaela Boyle, as she set the school record for the fastest hat-trick, scoring all three goals of a natural hat-trick in 3:43. The Clarkson transfer was named the CHA Player of the Week for her performance, and she now has an astounding 12 goals in 16 games. Also being recognized was freshman Maggy Burbridge, who was named CHA Rookie of the Week for her two-point night on Sunday.
Men’s basketball goes back on the road against Cleveland State
The Colonials (2-6) begin another road trip on Saturday when they face the Cleveland State Vikings (3-4). RMU is struggling to deal with their grueling schedule, which only sees them play three home games over their first 13 games. Despite this, the Colonials are coming off of a 102-62 win against Geneva (2-4), which put them back in the win column.
Sophomore Dante Treacy had a solid 14-point performance for the Colonials in their tight loss to Marquette last Saturday. He is averaging 7.9 PPG and 4.3 assists per game so far this season.
Women’s Basketball looks to capitalize against reeling Xavier squad
The Colonials (3-3) will aim to punch a bit above their weight on Sunday when they face a struggling Xavier Musketeers (1-4) squad. Xavier has lost four consecutive road games and they will be on the road again against RMU.
It was a solid team effort last game out for the Colonials, as no players got more than 10 points in their win over Pitt-Johnstown (6-1, 2-0 PSAC). The spread-out court time allowed junior Honoka Ikematsu to put up a season-high nine points off the bench, as well as dishing out two assists.
