Weekend Round-up: 11/23/18 – 11/25/18

In case you didn’t follow what happened with RMU sports over Thanksgiving break, here is a quick round-up on every game that RMU Sentry Media couldn’t get a reporter to go to.

11/23/18:

Men’s Basketball: RMU – 46; Purdue – 84

The Robert Morris men’s basketball team (3-3) lost in disappointing fashion when the Colonials dropped their game against the Purdue University Boilermakers (5-1) on Friday by the final score of 84-46. The first half started with Purdue going on a 7-0 run with Robert Morris slowly trying to catch up, but they ultimately could not as the Boilermakers held a 44-23 lead at halftime. The second half wasn’t much better as Purdue University ran away with the lead. The Colonials saw Purdue go on a 7-0 run at around the halfway point of the second half and the game ultimately resulted in the Colonials dropping the game 84-46.

NEC Player of the Week Josh Williams saw the most time in the game with 34 minutes of play and went 2-7 in field goals, 2-4 in three-pointers and 2-2 in free throws for a total of eight points on the night. The Colonials return home on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m. to face the Youngstown State Penguins (3-4).

Women’s Basketball: RMU – 55; SMU – 60

The RMU Colonials (1-4) didn’t fare well in a close game on Friday as they dropped their game by a final score of 60-55 against SMU (3-2). The first half scoring started with RMU taking a 7-5 opening score, but SMU ended the half with a 29-25 lead. The first half resulted in Megan Callahan putting up the best performance with 15 minutes played and 10 points scored. The second half resulted in SMU taking the game with a 60-55 win as they had control of the lead from there. Nneka Ezeigbo delivered a strong performance in the second half with 15 minutes played, four for seven in field goals and 10 points scored for RMU.

Men’s Hockey: RMU – 3 ; Mercyhurst – 1

After not playing last week due to Thanksgiving, the RMU Colonials (5-6-1, 4-3-1 AHC) returned to action over the weekend and opened up the first game of a home-and-home weekend set with a 3-1 win over the Mercyhurst University Lakers (3-4-1, 3-7-2 AHC). Robert Morris opened up the scoring first at the 11-minute mark in the first period with a goal from Adam Spellacy with an assist from Michael Coyne and Kyle Horsman. Mercyhurst tied it later in the first period at the 19-minute mark with a power play goal from Joshua Lammon with an assist from Derek Barach and Wes Baker. RMU retook the lead in the second period with a goal from Jacob Coleman with an assist from Nick Jenny and Brendan Michaelian at 11:18, and then RMU tacked on another goal later in the period by Eric Israel, who had some help from Alex Tonge and Sean Giles at the very last second. This was all the scoring in the game and the Colonials defeated Mercyhurst 3-1.

Women’s Hockey: RMU – 2; Cornell – 5

After opening up the game with a 2-0 lead over the seventh-ranked Cornell University Big Red, the Robert Morris University Colonials (6-8-3, 4-1-1 CHA) dropped their first game against Cornell (6-1-3, 4-1-1 ECAC) by the score of 5-2 on Friday. Robert Morris got the first goal in the first period from Amber Rennie, who had assists from Maggie Lague and Jaycee Gebhard. Caitlyn Sadowy scored in the second period and was assisted by Emily Curlett and Natalie Marcuzzi.

After that, Cornell scored four straight unanswered goals in the second period and one in the third. Grace Graham scored the first goal unassisted for Cornell, then Willow Slobodzian scored the second and third goals respectively after that, and then Maddie Mills scored the fourth goal in the second period. The fifth and final goal scored by the Big Red came unassisted from Bourbonnais.

11/24/18:

Women’s Basketball: RMU – 53; Loyola Marymount- 61

The RMU Colonials (1-5) ended their Thanksgiving road trip with a 61-53 loss to Loyola Marymount University (4-1) on Saturday. In the first half, RMU started with an early lead and managed to solidify a strong first half with a 33-29 lead over LMU. Nneka Ezeigbo continued her strong road performance with a first half consisting of 15 minutes played, five for seven in field goals and 10 points scored. The second half resulted in Robert Morris losing their lead and falling to LMU by a final score of 61-53. Megan Callahan continued her strong performance with 12 minutes played, three for five in field goals, two for two in three-pointers and eight points scored. Robert Morris hits the Midwest to play Iowa University (4-1) on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3:00 p.m.
