Kickin’ it in the Crescent City: SCJ Officers invade New Orleans
From the French Quarter to Bourbon Street, New Orleans is crawling with history and culture and its no wonder that the College Media Association decided to hold its 92nd annual Fall Convention in the Crescent City from October 23-27.
During my three days in New Orleans, I not only gained invaluable advice and connected with individuals from across the country, both in a professional and social facet, but I also explored the region’s hospitality every day for lunch, dinner, and drinks.
Being the sports editor of The Sentry, my main priority by attending sessions was to gain a better insight into the professional world of sports journalism and I was able to expand my knowledge of the subject by sitting in on panelists composed of reporters from The Times-Picayune, New Orleans’ daily newspaper.
The most important bit of information I took away from the convention was that, with the changing aspects of media, it is vital to adapt your news outlet’s content to reflect new technological advances that readers are constantly utilizing.
When we weren’t at the conference however, my fellow Society for Collegiate Journalist Officers and myself explored the Rajun Cajun lifestyle of the Big Easy, hitting up local hotspots that have made this town legendary.
Overall, I gained a great depth of knowledge of journalism by attending the CMA Fall Convention in New Orleans and I wouldn’t trade this experience with my friends for anything.
