PITTSBURGH — The Drug Enforcement Agency plans its 16th National Prescription Take Back Day.

On Saturday the DEA encourages anyone with unused prescription drugs to dispose of them this weekend during the drug take-back day.

According to a press release from the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety, an estimated two million Americans will suffer from addiction to prescription opioids or illegal opioids in 2018.

“Eight in 10 heroin users started with abusing prescriptions,” said Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Rebecca Bassano. “The fight against this epidemic begins at home.”

In the spring of 2018, residents teamed up to collect 610 pounds of prescription drugs and hope to increase the number with the new collection effort.

“Pittsburghers can join in the fight against the opioid crisis this weekend by cleaning out medicine cabinets and turning in expired or unused prescription drugs,” the department said in a statement.

Members of the community can bring prescription drugs to designated locations on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
