“As I said before, one of the goals that I haven’t achieved yet is taking a ring and leaving Robert Morris as a champion,” said senior Artemis Spanou prior to the start of the 2013-14 season. Almost five months later, Robert Morris defeated Bryant 72-67 in the Northeast Conference semifinals Wednesday night at the Sewall Center. The Colonials are on the brink of cutting down the nets and earning a NCAA tournament berth. It would add the perfect exclamation point to the their leader’s record-breaking career. Spanou dropped 24 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists to pace the Colonials. She commanded a double-team most of the game, enabling her to find quick, easy dishes to freshman forward Cassie Oursler, who added 13 points and four rebounds. “I'm excited,” said Spanou. “It's my first time at the final, and I'm excited to play on Sunday. We're going to have fun and see what happens.” The Col...

With the start of the NEC Women’s Basketball Tournament quickly approaching, here’s a bracket preview with tentative matchups for postseason play. All matchups are based off the current conference standings, presuming nothing dramatically shifts in the last two weeks of the season. 1. Robert Morris (16-9, 12-2 NEC) vs. 8. LIU Brooklyn (7-18, 5-9 NEC) Series: 2-0 RMU RMU has gotten the better of the Blackbirds in the team’s two meetings this season, most recently a 36-point thumping on February 17th in Moon Township. The Colonials play very well at home, and are on a current nine game win streak at the Sewall Center. This will mark the start of star senior Artemis Spanou’s final chance at a NEC ring, so look for her to further elevate her game once the postseason starts, which seems to be impossible right? An upset isn’t looming within this contest, considering LIU doesn’t have the firepower to ...

For the Robert Morris women’s basketball team as of late, there’s no place like home. Literally. The Colonials spent Monday evening dominating LIU Brooklyn at the Charles L. Sewall Center, pounding the Blackbirds 79-43 to improve to 12-2 in the NEC and extend their home winning-streak to nine. The 36-point margin was the second largest in the RMU-LIU Brooklyn series, and sent a message the rest of the conference that the first-place Colonials aren’t exactly coasting to the postseason. “We worked really hard today on the defensive end holding them to a low shooting percentage and kept them off the offensive glass,” said associate head coach Charlie Buscaglia. “We worked hard and our shooting was an aberration of our work ethic.” The team shot 50 percent from the floor (27-of-54), and four of five starters scored in double figures. Buscaglia explained the importance of having a legitimate scorin...

In a Saturday afternoon affair at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team grinded out another win, this time defeating Central Connecticut State 66-49 in the matinee of a RMU basketball double-header. The win improves the Colonials to 15-9 overall and 11-2 in the NEC. It wasn’t their prettiest display, but the Colonials ultimately found a way to win, relying on another stat-stuffing performance from senior forward Artemis Spanou. The Greece native tallied 17 points, 21 boards and six assists to lead all scorers, and really helped Robert Morris to control the glass throughout. “Like Coach Sal says, getting defensive rebounds and scoring is the best offense,” said Spanou. “We’ve got to go for every rebound. We’re stronger and taller than everyone else in the conference, so it’s our ball.” The Colonials started the game very slow, and were streaky throughout mo...
